Shell to Shore collects and recycles oyster shells from all around the state of Georgia for use in green-infrastructure projects along the coast in conjunction with a diligent and energetic group of volunteers, partners, and collaborators.
We collect oyster shells from our restaurant partners in Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, and Savannah, as well as from oyster-related events in the state. We then cure them for 6 months before hauling them to the coast to build living shorelines and oyster reefs.
This green infrastructure mitigates erosion and coastal flooding brought on by sea-level rise and storm surge. Shell to Shore works to preserve the coastline, raise awareness about the benefit of recycling oyster shells, and help safeguard the livelihood and culture of those most closely tied to the coast.
